French’s 24-hour deadline
Panic RoomAmos French’s 24-hour deadline turns Don Challenor’s search for information into an urgent attempt to help Fran Revell, whom Amos French is holding as leverage. The demand links Don’s investigation of the panic room at Wortalleth West to the question of where Jack Harkness’s money has gone, while making Fran’s treatment depend on what Don can uncover.
The Demand
Amos French presents the deadline as an alternative to more intensive questioning of Fran. He says Don is well placed to investigate because Don and Fran are closely entangled in Jack Harkness’s affairs, and points to the panic room at Wortalleth West as the mystery he wants resolved. Since breaking into it will not be easy, Amos French offers Don the chance to produce the information himself rather than leave Fran to face further interrogation.
The terms are deliberately spare: Don has twenty-four hours, and he is to call Amos French’s number when he has something to report. When Don begins to object, Amos French insists that he can do it and says he is counting on him. The deadline is thus both a threat and a coercive assignment, backed by Fran’s captivity rather than by any confidence that Don knows how to enter the room.
Fran as Leverage
Don asks to speak to Fran, a request Amos French contrasts with what he would do for his own ex-wife. Amos French calls Don a softy, then puts Fran on the call. The brief contact does not resolve her situation: Amos French returns to the conversation, cuts it off as pillow talk, and repeats the twenty-four-hour limit before ending the call.
The abrupt interruption makes clear that Don’s access to Fran is controlled and conditional. His concern for her is not incidental to the demand; Amos French explicitly treats it as an incentive for Don to find something. The deadline therefore binds the search for information to the immediate risk of what may happen to Fran if Don fails to deliver.
Don’s Response and the Stakes
After the call, Don sits on the bed with the phone still in his hand, shocked and unsure what to do. The kidnapping changes the character of his inquiry. Looking for clues about Jane Glasson had involved risks that could still seem theoretical; Fran’s abduction makes the danger immediate. Don understands that she was taken somewhere between her hotel and her appointment with Robin Pawley in Helston, and that she is being held until she, Don, or someone else provides what her captors want.
That demand concerns the whereabouts of Jack Harkness’s money. Don recognizes the connection but has no better idea than Fran does of where Jack Harkness hid it. The 24-hour deadline consequently does not give him a ready route to compliance: it gives him a fixed period to investigate a locked-room mystery while Fran’s freedom is being used to compel him. The passage establishes the deadline’s pressure and stakes, but does not yet reveal whether Don will meet it or what he will discover at Wortalleth West.
